Dominik Eulberg
Bionik

Mix: [ARTIST ALBUM]
Label: Cocoon Recordings
Date: 15.11.07

‘Bionik’ isn't just German DJ / producer / national park ranger Dominik Eulberg's third LP; it's his second album of the year, following this spring's field recording-inspired ‘Heimische Gefilde’. ‘Bionik’ takes things back indoors this time out, gathering ten cuts melding pure techno with elements of house and trance.

Mr. Dominik Eulberg is maybe one of the oddest / most interesting characters in Techno & House nowadays – but also one of the nicest and most down-to-earth producers of the last few years. Like no one else, he combines sound and art research with solid and straight productions, which has attracted fans from the disparate genres of Techno, House and even Trance.

The young man from the Westerwald alternates between straight-in-your-face humour and very profound approaches, musically as well as design-wise in word and image, however, his secret seems to be his rootedness.

Eulberg's productions cannot be described in only a few sentences. He is responsible for big tunes like "Bionik" and big remixes like the ones he did for Roman Flügel’s "Geht's Noch?" and Oliver Koletzki’s "Der Mückenschwarm", as well as some clacking electro tracks and sound research tunes on the Cologne based label Traum, where he is now one of the biggest artists. It was on Traum that he released “Heimische Gefilde (Native Habitat)”, a strange album that combined nature (complete with bird call and other sounds of nature) with Techno, and included as ever, some brilliant tracks that found favour with a host of top name DJs.

This new album on Cocoon seems to be both a finish and new start at the same time, with productions emerging from very different approaches, never sounding heavy or over-produced, but also trying to avoid being just another minimal statement but rather looking forward, to the time after Minimal. Similar to his DJ-Sets, he takes us on a journey into his world, his studio, his microcosm, and in so doing, one understands why he is relating to his home and even paying tribute to it in his song titles.

An interesting character, and a simply brilliant album.
